We believe the Cactus Energy Solar (PV) installation project for PING Europe’s headquarters in Gainsborough, UK, is an exemplary model of successful solar renewable energy deployment. The project exemplifies innovative design, technical expertise, and seamless project management from inception to completion. These merits make it a worthy candidate for recognition and commendation.
Unlike conventional solar installations, this project highlight design innovation. Cactus Energy proposed design incorporates the company’s iconic “PING” logo into the the solar array, transforming the panels from functional tools to a striking visual declaration. In addition to energy generation; it’s a beacon of environmental responsibility, a testament to PING’s forward-thinking spirit, and a unique landmark that inspires and educates the community.
“We are absolutely delighted with our recent solar panel installation. Choosing to partner with such a professional, knowledgeable, and forward-thinking company.”

We had the incredible opportunity to pop down and meet the brilliant people at Carbon Digital to present them with a very well-deserved Carbon Heroes Award.
If you haven’t heard of them before, Carbon Digital is a multi-award-winning visual effects & virtual production studio located in Trafford Park not far from Media City.
They specialise in creating truly immersive Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality experiences with a high-end VFX approach. Plus, with an extensive background in the game industry, they stand out by being able to deliver every part of the production pipeline, from creative content to full shoot and post-production.
Their mission is to wow their clients and audiences, and with their phenomenal RecodeXR studio providing both LED stage (pictured in the post) and green-screen studio sets, they are in a great position to deliver on that mission!
It was amazing to see how their business is structured and to hear about the amazing sustainability benefits that can arise from virtual production.
Just picture it! Imagine being able to simulate multiple locations around the world, without all the travel and its carbon burden. Having the ability to simulate large sets, without needing tonnes of construction materials discarded afterwards, and to iterate on a product or set without having to reconstruct or rely on physical distribution. These are just a fraction of the ways that their workflow can have huge carbon footprint benefits.
After our visit, we can say that the great people at Carbon Digital are not only truly passionate about the quality of work they deliver, but as was apparent after our first meeting with Sue McHugh they also place sustainability at the heart of everything they do.
So, if you need any of the services below, these are the North West Carbon Heroes for you and your business!

Sian Carroll, Admin Co-ordinator here at Survivors Manchester, has been making positive changes across our business to make us more carbon efficient. The changes she has implemented may seem small but for an organisation with over 30 staff, spanning over two office units as well as working within every men’s prison in the North West of England the combined impact will be significant.
She has successfully:
– promoted a cycle to work scheme
– introduced glass/plastic/paper recycling in all offices
– enrolled our operations team in a carbon literacy training
– implemented eco-friendly/sustainable bamboo toilet paper
– had live plants introduced into all offices to improve CO2 levels and boost general well-being of our colleagues
– highlighted the importance of using, where possible, local suppliers so as to reduce carbon footprint

Since May 2020 we have embarked on a significant programme of replacing 1,350 old type light fitting for LED – we ran a blog article https://storageworld.co.uk/brighter-times/ which expands on what was involved. We are still at the super early stages of calculating the true impact, but expect our energy cost savings to exceed the 15% stated in the article. What the article doesn’t explain is: –
– We have just opened a new store at Airport City (March2020), which is fully LED on time monitored PIRs
– We then rolled this technology back into our two existing stores Manchester Central and Middleton.

While making the best out of a bad situation – Buzzin’ Sounds have made investments across the business to reduce their Carbon Footprint. Including an environmentally sustainable vocal booth, made with Rockwool and recycled denim insulation. This is not only important for the business but due to their space, it meant that they can reduce their need for external heat sources – which reduced their use of electricity and allowed for air to flow better. They have also gone about with reducing current carbon footprints by replacing light bulbs with LEDs, adding acoustic panneling made with environmentally sustainable materials, building new equipment using reclaimed wood, reducing paper usage by 80% by going digital with company based documents and making further small changes to make the business more environmentally friendly.
Comment from Mpostcode:
“It’s so good to see the return of the Carbon Hero award after a gap of a few months, while we all find our feet again. Boss Model Management, based at 33 Turner Street in the Northern Quarter, embarked on a 3 year project to restore and renovate a five storey derelict grade II listed warehouse built in 1853 and convert it into a zero carbon building. The project was completed in 2017. The building uses an innovative renewable heating system utilising 3 air source heat pumps on the roof for underfloor and ceiling heating. Restoring all the heritage features of the building was also very important in order to help preserve the history of Manchester’s industry past. The project was delivered entirely by Manchester companies including the architect, main building contractor and a large number of specialist consultants and contractors.

For the last 6 years SE Recycling has led the way in IT recycling. As a business we’ve made it our aim to create a sustainable future for all through not only recycling but by working with the local community, charities and education. SER has a zero tolerance to landfill and refurbish first putting back into society affordable equipment, creating effective solutions for SMEs, schools and charities. For many of our clients we are able to raise funds from their recycled equipment in which are donated to a charity of their choice. In doing so we help support those less fortunate and reduce the amount of waste being produced. We have developed an IT2Schools project that has been adopted by several schools across the North West, the project involves students creating their own IT recycling business. The project not only provides students key business skills, preparing them for a future in work but also teaches them the importance of creating a sustainable environment for future generations.

I am aiming to be the most climate-positive business in Manchester in 2020. We plant more trees with Gone West to over covering the carbon emissions created by our business and the trips we do, making us completely carbon positive. Not only that this year we are increasing our support by me making four huge changes in how I run my business. Giving up my city-centre office to reduce carbon emissions by working from home. Changing my home energy supplier to Octopus which only uses 100% renewable energy and offsets all my carbon emissions from home with an additional fee to my tariff.
My new vegan diet will reduce my carbon footprint by 70% and zero waste will remove the 400Kg of landfill I create a year! Making I can inspire some changes in the group!

- We have a recycle initiative set in place to ensure we recycle all plastic, glass, paper, and metal waste where possible – including the addition of dedicated recycle bins across the head office.

In my experience of Greystone they have always been focused on the environment and trying to be as ‘clean’ as possible. I.T by its very nature is made up of cables and hardware.
Greystone always use power and cooling efficient systems and hardware they use and provide to companies. They leverage virtualisation and cloud technology to reduce using actual hardware and materials, which also makes a company more efficient, reduce energy usage and have less impact on the environment.
Finally, Greystone encourage remote working and implement secure solutions which furthermore reduce the environmental impact of a business.
Comment from winner Greystone Consulting Ltd:
So proud that Greystone Consulting Ltd was nominated and won the Manchester’s Carbon Hero award from MPostcode.co.uk. Glad our green IT solutions are making a difference.
Comment from Mpostcode:
Being at the awards yesterday has been one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences I’ve had the pleasure to be involved with. Hearing about the efforts that Greystone Consulting Ltd, Thermatic and The Dot Factory have gone to, to play their part in building a sustainable future for everyone has been incredible. Well done for all your hard work and I’m looking forward to sharing all your successes with everyone in the future!
